PBWiki 1.0 and Invite Key
There is no longer an invite key so that everyone must log in, enabling teachers to track who views/edits the wiki.
Wiki Access Methods
- Admin can add individual users by going to the top right of your page, Settings>Wiki Settings>Access Controls>Users and typing in the e-mail and permission level.
- Multiple e-mails can be typed in, separated by commas or by entering one per line. Everyone will have the same permission level.
- Have students & parents request access. If they are not logged in, they can click on Edit and they will be told to Request Access. The admin can approve the request by either clicking on a link that is sent via e-mail or going to User Settings (at bottom) and clicking to approve. One approved, students still need to create an account before logging in. (Unless they are added by the Classroom Accounts for students without e-mails method).
- Classroom Accounts for Students Without Emails : (NOTE: Make sure you are hooked up to a printer when doing this). Go to Settings>Wiki Settings>Access Controls>Users. Click on the link that says "If your students don't have e-mail addresses, create accounts for your students."
- Specify the number of students and the permission level.
- You can fill in the name and make changes to permissions and passwords or accept the default.
- VERY IMPORTANT! Double check all information. Names and passwords can NOT be changed once they are created. If a student ends up not liking a password, you will have to delete the account and create a new one.
- Print the account and password lists for your records and a copy to cut up and distribute to students. You will also receive a confirmation e-mail with the list, however you will NOT be able to access the passwords from PBWiki afterwards so make sure that you keep this information.
Information about Classroom Accounts
- you can change permission level of users in the same way as those with e-mails
- the user name gives them access to only YOUR wiki. If students need access to more than one wiki, they will need new user names on those. Suggestion: teachers can coordinate to use the same usernames on all school wikis. To do this, you will have to enter names manually on subsequent wikis.
- students can not create their own wiki without a real e-mail address
- 99 accounts can be added through the batch option, but you can repeat doing this until you've added everyone
- if you try to create an account for a name already on the wiki, you'll get a warning message
- students entered this way do not have a profile

I really like the flexibility of being able to add students and others to a wiki either with our without email accounts. I had been thinking that it was time to require that all students have an email account, but I don't think that is going to happen at my school, at least not this year. So, it is very good to have a way to give them accounts without one. do think it would be nice to allow for changes in usernames and passwords once they are created, but as long as we are careful, this won't be a big issue.

I really like the new student account option. Much easier way to get kids involved with the wiki. As far as notification purposes, is there a way to get only my classroom wiki notifications "Right Away". Otherwise my email would be bursting at the seems with updates from this particular wiki.

As a 6th grade teacher, with students under 13, the feature which allows enrolling students without an email makes a HUGE difference. Thanks for adding this feature!

My wiki doesn’t look the same way as yours on the webinar video. If I log out and go to the url for my wiki (as if I were a stranger) I don’t have the Edit tab (the one you clicked to get the message “request access”). Neither do I have the link in the sidebar that says “request access”.
What I can choose from is a link next to log in that says “create an account”. On that page the student can create their account entering an email address & password. After submitting they get the message “Your PBwiki account has been created! Please check your email for a confirmation message.” It seems like this way I lose control of who gets approved or not.
If they instead click the link “login” they find a button with “request access” where they should type in their emailaddress and a message, just as you showed on the video.
I guess I have to change the settings somewhere, but I don’t know how. Right now the sec urity settings are: “anyone can view this wiki” and “let people request access to the wiki”.
Thanks.

Also: I tried to delete a user from my wiki. Since it’s only me during this planning phase of the wiki I have to use my second email to log in as a user. I wanted to delete that user in order to try what happens (how the email looks) if I use “create an account” instead of “request access”. So: I deleted my second user the way you showed on the video (settings / users / delete).
Anyway: when I tried to create an account again, using this email (that had been used before but had been deleted) I got the message “you already have an account”. So I tried to log in. And I DO get logged in. But when I log out, and log in as the administrator and go to settings / users that user can’t be found! The only user in the list is me as an administrator (earlier I had two users: the administrator and a writer).

When you logged in with the deleted user name, could you edit or comment? Perhaps because you are a public wiki the login works but the user can't actually do anything because they don't have permission.
