Google Gadgets

Gadgets powered by Google are miniature objects made by Google users like you that offer cool and dynamic content that can be placed on any page on the web.  Gadgets might come in handy when you're at work (to-do list, currency converter, calendar), at school (calculator, Wikipedia, translation tool), or just passing time (news, blogs, games).

How do I embed google gadgets into my wiki?

  1. Go to the edit mode of your wiki
  2. Click "insert plugin" --- >PBwiki Productivity ---> Google gadget
  3. Click "here" and search the google directory for the plug in you would like to use
  4. Modify your plug in and then copy the embed code (at the bottom of the page)
  5. Return to your wiki tab and paste the embed code information into the preview box.
  6. Click preview and OK.
  7. Press save and you're done!

Educational Uses

  • I used a Google Map to mark children's museums, and other places to spark my students' interests in learning about different topics.   - Carol Ferguson
  • The equation editor is handy for students to create the text needed for equations to show up properly on wiki pages.  -Melissa Pearson
  • I added the Dictionary.com lookup tool so that students never have to ask me what a word means, or how to spell a word again.  In addition, when students are working on projects involving research, they sometimes need a clearer understanding of a word in order to paraphrase the source (they must always put things into their own words).  I am going to try to figure out the Maps gadget as well, since most of our collaborative projects (using PBwiki) involve finding and marking places in Google Earth.  Since each group only has one instance of Google Earth running within the group, other group members can use the Maps gadget to quickly look up places without having to run Google Earth on their own computers.  The Maps gadget has some specific settings I need to figure out before I can insert it, though.  BE WARNED: some of the content in Google gadgets is NOT appropriate for young children. -- Diane Main
  • I added a digital clock so the kids can keep track of their own time!!
  • I thought the countdown timer would be neat for big projects coming up ... just haven't been able to make it work in my wiki yet :-(.  I'll have to keep working on that, because I think it would be helpful to the kids to see the days go by as they are procrastinating!  ~ Vivian Cisneros

Is it possible to get rid of the borders around the gadgets? Or change the border color to white?

I love Vivian's idea of a ticking clock! I'll have to set that up, too. If you figure it out, Vivian, please let me know. I'll take a look at your page, too.

I don't like that many google gadgets, as this wikipedia search window for instance, opens in the same window - that is, my wiki "disappears". I don't want to leave the wiki without logging out. Does anyone know how to change that setting?
